Earthen Lagynos, Wide Flat Bottomed Wine Decanter, Water Pitcher

One of the ancestors of the modern decanter design, Lagynos are ancient wine vessels with a wide flat bottom, high narrow neck, a handle and a lid. Decants wine with its wide bottom maximizing aeration, along with its naturally porous unglazed clay body. Unlike glazed decor pieces we only go for a plain finish with white clay stylings over Cappadocian red clay. Simply natural and meant to be used! Can also be used as a water pitcher, unglazed clay vessels chill their contents through evaporative cooling. Also a great piece of rustic home decor. In the lagynophória, a Dionysiac street festival, participants brought along a lagynos for their share of wine! A Greek Hellenistic design prevalent up to and into the Imperial period, commonly used along with Amphoras for table serving and decanting. Unglazed terracotta is porous, cleaning agents may be absorbed during washing. Please use only water, a brush, and natural cleaning agents for cleaning. Volume: 21 oz.
